Governor R.N. Ravi also conveyed his grief, praising Deva’s remarkable contribution to Tamil film music. He stated that Deva’s compositions had enriched the state’s cultural fabric and that his melodies had earned a special place in the hearts of millions of music lovers. The Governor acknowledged that Deva’s music transcended generations, leaving an enduring legacy.

Musical Roots and Collaborations

Deva’s journey in music began with humble beginnings. He learned piano under Dhanraj Master, who also taught the legendary Ilaiyaraaja, and studied Indian classical music on the harmonium. His brothers, Sabesh and Murali, who worked as instrumentalists with Ilaiyaraaja and other music directors, played a pivotal role in introducing him to the film industry. Deva often acknowledged their support and collaboration as instrumental to his career’s success.

He made his full-fledged debut as a composer in Tamil cinema with ‘Mattukkara Mannaru’ in 1986. His first major film featuring established stars was ‘Manasukketha Maharasa’ in 1989, followed by ‘Vaigasi Poranthachu,’ which solidified his presence in the industry. Deva was known for his prolific output, often composing for 27 to 30 films in a single calendar year, a testament to his dedication and efficiency.

The composer’s work extended beyond gaana music. He also composed devotional albums and provided music for television shows. His collaborations with lyricist Vairamuthu on films such as ‘Annamalai’, ‘Baashha’, and ‘Kushi’ produced numerous hit songs that remain popular to this day. The report also noted Deva’s association with actors like Vijay, for whom he composed music in several early films such as ‘Rasigan’ and ‘Priyamudan’, further cementing his impact on popular Tamil cinema.

Deva’s legacy continues through his son, Srikanth Deva, who is also a music composer, and his brothers who are active in the music industry. His passing marks the end of an era for many, but his vast musical output ensures that his melodies will continue to be heard and cherished for generations to come.
