Two people, including a 6-year-old boy, were killed and 11 others were injured when a truck drove onto a soccer field during a youth game in Wichita, Kansas, on Saturday. The driver, a 34-year-old woman, was taken into custody, and authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The Chenab Times has learned that the incident occurred around 3:25 p.m. local time at the Stryker Soccer Complex. According to Captain Aaron Moses of the Wichita Police Department, a 35-year-old man and the 6-year-old boy died at the scene. The injured victims, whose ages range from 5 to 68, sustained injuries that were described as non-life-threatening, though some were considered severe. Two juveniles were reportedly in the vehicle with the driver at the time of the incident.
Police have stated that the driver has been cooperative with the investigation. While the motive and intent behind the incident remain unclear, authorities are working to determine how and why the vehicle entered the soccer field. The Wichita Mayor, Lily Wu, expressed her condolences and described the event as a heartbreaking tragedy for the city.
Eyewitness accounts described a black pickup truck driving onto the field and striking several people before coming to a stop. Some witnesses reported hearing a loud noise just before the incident. Emergency responders were on the scene rapidly, with community members also providing immediate aid to the injured before the arrival of official first responders. The Wichita Fire Chief, Michael Mire, noted the impressive community response in assisting the injured.
Following the incident, all events at the Stryker Soccer Complex were canceled until further notice. The police department has also set up a portal for the public to submit any video evidence that may assist in the ongoing investigation. The driver, whose child was reportedly playing soccer on a different field at the complex, has been taken into custody. Authorities have confirmed there is no further public threat.
The identities of the deceased have not been released pending notification of their families. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and authorities have not yet determined whether the event was intentional or accidental. The collision occurred during a youth soccer game, drawing a large response from local law enforcement and emergency services. The area around the soccer complex was secured as the investigation commenced.
