Domestic LPG Cylinder Prices Hiked by Rs 50; Excise Duty on Petrol, Diesel Raised

New Delhi, April 7 – India on Monday raised the price of domestic liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinders by Rs 50 per unit, affecting both subsidised and non-subsidised consumers, Union Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said.

The hike will see the cost of a 14.2-kg cylinder under the Ujjwala scheme rise from Rs 500 to Rs 550, while the price for non-Ujjwala users will increase from Rs 803 to Rs 853. The revision comes amid broader adjustments in fuel pricing and tax policy as global crude prices fluctuate.

Last week, the government had reduced prices of commercial LPG cylinders by Rs 41, providing relief to restaurants, hotels, and other commercial establishments that rely on the fuel for daily operations.

Separately on Monday, the government also announced an increase in excise duty on petrol and diesel, although retail prices will remain unchanged. The excise on petrol has been raised to Rs 13 per litre, and that on diesel to Rs 10 per litre, according to an official order.

The revised duties will come into effect on April 8, 2025. While excise duty changes are typically passed on to consumers, the government said the impact would be absorbed by oil marketing companies, offset by a reduction in retail prices due to declining international crude rates.

The adjustments reflect the government’s efforts to balance fiscal needs while managing the inflationary impact of energy prices on consumers.
