Iran Urges UN Security Council to Convene Emergency Meeting Over US and Israeli Strikes

Tehran demands immediate action to halt what it describes as unlawful aggression threatening global peace, following coordinated attacks on Iranian territory.

Iran has called on the United Nations Security Council to hold an emergency session to address recent military strikes by the United States and Israel, which Tehran says violate its sovereignty and pose a grave threat to international peace and security.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has submitted a formal letter to the UN Security Council and Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, urging the body to bear responsibility for safeguarding global stability. According to details received by The Chenab Times, the letter demands the immediate convening of an emergency meeting to examine the acts of aggression, halt the unlawful use of force, and ensure accountability for the breaches of peace.

In the communication, Iran described the strikes—targeting defence infrastructure and civilian sites in multiple cities—as a flagrant violation of its territorial integrity and a breach of Article 2(4) of the UN Charter, which prohibits the threat or use of force against any state’s sovereignty. The letter emphasised that these actions represent a real and serious threat to both regional and international peace. It further called on all UN member states to unequivocally condemn the aggression and take urgent collective measures to confront it.

The strikes occurred amid ongoing diplomatic efforts between Iran and the United States concerning Tehran’s nuclear programme, adding to concerns that the military action could derail negotiations. Iran’s Foreign Ministry has condemned the attacks as occurring during the holy month of Ramadan and ahead of the Nowruz holiday, characterising them as particularly provocative.

In response to the strikes, Iran has launched retaliatory missile attacks targeting Israeli territory and US military bases in the region, including locations in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Jordan. Iranian officials have asserted that these countermeasures are exercised under Article 51 of the UN Charter, which recognises the inherent right of self-defence. The Foreign Ministry has vowed a decisive and proportionate response, stating that Iran’s armed forces stand ready to defend the nation’s sovereignty using all available means.

The UN Security Council has scheduled an emergency meeting to discuss the escalation, with Secretary-General Guterres condemning the military actions by the US and Israel, as well as Iran’s subsequent retaliation, for undermining international peace and security. Russia’s Foreign Ministry has described the initial strikes as a preplanned and unprovoked act of armed aggression against a sovereign UN member state.

Reactions from the international community remain divided. Some nations have condemned the US-Israeli operation as reckless and destabilising, while others have expressed support for addressing perceived threats from Iran’s activities. The developments have heightened fears of a broader regional conflict, with explosions reported in Tehran and other Iranian cities, and missile interceptions over Israel.

Iran’s letter reiterates its position that it does not seek war but will not tolerate violations of its territory. It warns that continued aggression risks unpredictable consequences and calls for the Security Council to intervene decisively to prevent further escalation. The situation continues to unfold, with diplomatic channels strained and military postures elevated across the Middle East.
