Banihal, Jammu and Kashmir – The Banihal and Ramsoo sub-divisions organized a grand welcome for local MLA Sajjad Shaheen upon his arrival, celebrating his recent efforts that culminated in the approval of a proposed university campus in the region. The event saw a significant turnout of residents and party workers eager to express their support.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that hundreds of individuals and party cadres lined the old highway at Ramsoo, Nachilana, and Gund Banihal on Friday to greet MLA Sajjad Shaheen. They escorted him in a celebratory procession towards Banihal town. Residents from surrounding areas including Gool, Ramsoo, Pogal, Neel, and Khari participated in large numbers, signifying widespread public appreciation for the development initiative.
Addressing a gathering at the Bus Stand in Banihal, MLA Sajjad Shaheen conveyed his gratitude to key figures within the Jammu and Kashmir government and the National Conference party. He specifically thanked Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, National Conference President Farooq Abdullah, Education Minister Sakina Itoo, and other legislators for their support in passing the bill for the proposed university campus. The bill received unanimous approval in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly.
Shaheen elaborated on the ongoing efforts to expedite the operationalization of the new campus. He indicated that academic activities might commence from the existing Government Degree College Banihal premises as early as next year, pending formal clearance from the relevant university authorities. This development marks a significant step towards enhancing higher education accessibility in the remote and hilly terrain of Ramban district.
The proposal to establish a university campus in Banihal had gained traction due to persistent public demand. Its recent approval through a private member’s bill in the legislative assembly is widely regarded as a substantial stride in bolstering the higher education infrastructure in the less developed areas of Ramban district. The initiative is expected to provide much-needed academic opportunities and resources to students in the region.
