Noida Workers’ Wage Protest Turns Violent, Disrupting Metro and Traffic

Noida, Uttar Pradesh – A large-scale labor protest over wage hike demands turned violent on Monday in Noida, bringing significant disruption to the region’s transportation networks, including major highways and the Noida Metro. Thousands of commuters were stranded as arterial roads were blocked for hours.

Protest Escalates Over Wage Hike Demands

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the protest, initiated by workers of the Motherson Group, entered its third day with employees intensifying their agitation. Their primary demands centered on higher wages and improved working conditions. The demonstration, largely concentrated in Noida’s Phase 2 and Sectors 59 to 62, quickly escalated from blocking roads to more disruptive actions, impacting metro operations across the industrial belt.

The situation deteriorated significantly when a section of the protesting workers moved towards National Highway 9 (NH-9). Eyewitness accounts described scenes of chaos as stone-pelting and arson targeting private vehicles and buses were reported. Clashes erupted between the demonstrators and the police forces deployed to manage the situation. A police vehicle was reportedly overturned amidst the unrest.

In response to the escalating violence, security forces deployed tear gas to disperse the assembled crowds and restore order. Authorities subsequently reinforced security measures across the affected areas. Despite these efforts, heavy traffic congestion persisted throughout the day, severely impacting office-goers and daily commuters along the Noida-Greater Noida corridor. Many individuals were unable to reach their workplaces.

Workers Cite Inflation, Poor Conditions

The protesting workers claim their current wages, ranging between Rs 9,000 and Rs 13,000 per month, are inadequate, especially considering they work 12-hour shifts. They cited the rising cost of living due to inflation and what they described as poor labor conditions as the primary grievances driving their demands for a salary revision.

Delhi Police on High Alert Amidst Spillover Concerns

Following the outbreak of violence in neighbouring Noida, the Delhi Police were placed on high alert. Security was tightened at key entry points into the national capital from Uttar Pradesh. According to police sources, multiple teams were deployed on all motorable roads connecting Noida to various parts of Delhi, with a particular focus on major border crossings. The aim was to prevent any potential spillover of the unrest into the city and to thwart the movement of anti-social elements.

Senior police officials stated that a strict vigil was being maintained, and thorough vehicle checks were being conducted to ensure the security of the city. The disruptions caused by the protest highlighted ongoing tensions between labor and industrial management in the region. Officials are reportedly engaged in efforts to restore normalcy while simultaneously addressing the workers’ long-standing demands.
