Pune: Speeding Water Tanker Claims Second Life in Weeks; Driver and Owner Booked

A speeding water tanker has claimed the life of a businessman in Pune, marking the second fatal accident involving such vehicles in three weeks. The incident occurred on the Bibwewadi-Kondhwa Road, where Anil Sitaram Alhat, a hotelier, was fatally struck by the tanker while riding his two-wheeler. The driver, Nilesh Laxman Pote, has been arrested, and the tanker’s owner, Bagtavarmal Rathi, has also been booked. According to police, the tanker’s fitness certificate had expired, and the owner was aware of this fact. The accident took place on Saturday morning around 10:30 am.

Pattern of Fatalities and Safety Concerns

This recent tragedy in Pune is part of a concerning pattern of accidents involving heavy vehicles, particularly water tankers. On April 8, 2026, a woman was killed in a similar incident in Wanowrie, which was the second fatal tanker accident in the city within 48 hours. In that case, the tanker owner was also charged, and the driver was arrested. Weeks prior, on April 18, 2026, a 43-year-old man died in Hadapsar after being run over by a speeding water tanker. The driver and owner in that incident faced charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, with investigations revealing potential safety lapses, including the alleged lack of a 360-degree camera and a cleaner.

These back-to-back incidents have intensified public concern over the unchecked movement of heavy vehicles in residential areas and the potential risks posed by reckless driving and lax enforcement. Residents have voiced allegations of tankers operating at high speeds through populated roads during peak hours, leading to an increase in accidents and posing a daily threat to lives.

Broader Incidents and Regulatory Pressure

The issue of tanker-related accidents extends beyond these specific incidents. In June 2023, a tanker carrying ethanol overturned on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, resulting in a fire and a death toll that eventually reached five. The driver and owner of that tanker were charged with culpable homicide. Investigations into that accident suggested that the driver had lost control of the speeding vehicle.

The recurring nature of these fatal accidents involving water tankers in Pune has put authorities under increased pressure to implement more stringent safety regulations and enhance monitoring of heavy vehicle operations. The incidents underscore the critical need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and a comprehensive review of safety standards for commercial vehicles operating within the city to prevent future tragedies.
