Tamil Nadu CM Joseph Vijay Secures Majority in Assembly Floor Test with 144 Votes

Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay comfortably won a crucial floor test in the State Legislative Assembly on Wednesday, securing 144 votes in favour of his government. The vote of confidence followed the recent assembly elections where Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) emerged as the single largest party, necessitating the test to prove his majority.

Rebel AIADMK Support Crucial for Victory

The outcome of the floor test was significantly influenced by a split within the principal opposition party, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). A faction of AIADMK MLAs, reportedly numbering around 25 and led by senior leaders C.V. Shanmugam and S.P. Velumani, defied the party whip issued by AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami and extended their support to Chief Minister Vijay’s government. This rebellion within the AIADMK ranks proved pivotal in ensuring Vijay’s victory.

According to details received by The Chenab Times, the assembly proceedings witnessed significant drama. While 144 MLAs voted in favour of the confidence motion, 22 MLAs voted against it, and five abstained. The DMK staged a walkout from the assembly during the proceedings, which reduced the effective strength of the House during the vote.

Coalition Government’s Strength

The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government, formed after the recent state elections, is a coalition that includes the Congress, CPI, CPI(M), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), and the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). Information was available with The Chenab Times that the coalition, including the support from the rebel AIADMK faction and an expelled AIADMK MLA, consolidated its position. The TVK party itself secured 108 seats in the state assembly elections, falling short of the majority mark. The support from its allies and the rebel faction comfortably pushed the government’s tally beyond the required majority.

Political Landscape of Tamil Nadu

The recent election results marked a significant shift in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape, ending decades of dominance by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the AIADMK. The emergence of the TVK as a major force represents the first time since 1977 that a party outside the traditional Dravidian political parties has come to power. The internal rift within the AIADMK, a party that has experienced several leadership struggles and factional splits in its history, was a prominent feature leading up to the floor test.

The floor test was conducted following a directive from the Governor, Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, asking the newly formed government to prove its majority. Chief Minister Vijay had taken the oath of office on May 10, 2026, after his party secured the necessary numbers to form the government. The political maneuvering and the rebellion within the AIADMK underscored the dynamic and often tumultuous nature of state politics.

The situation in the Tamil Nadu Assembly prior to the vote was tense, with intense discussions and lobbying. The Speaker, JCD Prabhakar, ordered the closure of all doors and cautioned members against moving from their seats, emphasizing the importance of a smooth and orderly process for the confidence vote.

The outcome of the floor test strengthens Chief Minister Vijay’s position and marks a significant political victory for the TVK and its allies. It also highlights the ongoing internal challenges faced by the AIADMK, which now finds itself in a divided opposition role.
