In a significant move to enhance pilgrim facilities, the Karnataka government plans to construct at least 1,000 additional rooms at the renowned Kukke Sri Subrahmanya Temple in Dakshina Kannada district. This expansion aims to accommodate the temple’s substantial annual footfall of over one crore devotees.
New Construction Projects to Augment Pilgrim Lodging
The temple administration is set to embark on constructing three choultry blocks, each with an estimated cost of ₹60 crore, and two dormitory blocks, each costing ₹50 crore. These new facilities will be located in Injadi, a site conveniently situated closer to the temple premises. This expansion is a critical part of the Master Plan Phase III for the development of facilities at Subrahmanya, which received clearance from the State Cabinet and has an estimated cost of ₹604.65 crore.
Karnataka Minister for Transport and Hindu Religious Institutions and Charitable Endowments Department, Ramalinga Reddy, highlighted the pressing need for increased accommodation. Currently, the temple administration provides only about 200 rooms, a figure deemed insufficient given the high number of pilgrims visiting the sacred site.
Kukke Subrahmanya Temple: A Major Pilgrimage Hub
Kukke Sri Subrahmanya Temple is a significant pilgrimage destination in Karnataka, particularly revered for the worship of Lord Subrahmanya, who is believed to offer protection from serpent-related afflictions. The temple attracts a vast number of devotees seeking to perform rituals such as Sarpa Samskara and Ashlesha Bali. The demand for accommodation has grown substantially with the increasing popularity of these rituals and the temple’s status as a major spiritual center.
The expansion project is expected to significantly alleviate the current accommodation shortage, allowing more devotees to experience a comfortable stay while visiting the temple. The temple administration has confirmed that it possesses sufficient funds in its deposits to undertake these development projects.
Broader Initiatives for Pilgrim Amenities
This initiative at Kukke Subrahmanya Temple is part of a wider strategy by the Karnataka government to improve pilgrimage infrastructure across the state. Similar projects have been undertaken or are planned for other major pilgrimage sites. For instance, the Karnataka government has invested approximately ₹200 crore in developing pilgrim amenities in Tirumala, Andhra Pradesh, which includes constructing modern residential complexes and welfare facilities. The digital platform for booking temple accommodations in Karnataka, launched in 2023, has also seen significant uptake, making it easier for devotees to plan their trips in advance.
The development at Kukke Subrahmanya aims to provide devotees with convenient and accessible lodging options, thereby enhancing their overall pilgrimage experience. The government’s commitment to augmenting facilities reflects its dedication to preserving and promoting religious tourism in the state.
