A wedding celebration in Uttar Pradesh’s Sonbhadra district took a tragic turn when a vehicle carrying guests overturned late Tuesday night, resulting in the deaths of three people and injuries to nine others. The accident occurred in the Rampur Barkonia police station area, near Kathar village, according to police reports.
The Chenab Times has learned that the vehicle, a pickup, was part of a wedding procession travelling from the Madihan area of neighbouring Mirzapur district to Sonbhadra when the driver reportedly lost control, leading to the fatal overturning incident. Emergency services were immediately dispatched to the scene.
Police officials stated that twelve individuals were transported to the district hospital. Among them, Rajan Gond, aged 20, Ajay Gond, aged 18, and Vinod Gond, aged 35, all residents of Madihan, were declared deceased by medical personnel during treatment. The district hospital became the scene of immediate medical attention for the injured.
Further medical intervention was required for two of the injured individuals, whose conditions were described as critical. They were subsequently referred to a hospital in Varanasi for advanced care. The remaining injured persons are currently receiving treatment at the district hospital, with authorities monitoring their progress closely.
The bodies of the deceased have been taken for post-mortem examinations, a standard procedure following such fatalities, as confirmed by Additional Superintendent of Police Rishabh Runwal. The local police have initiated an investigation into the circumstances that led to the accident, including assessing factors such as vehicle condition and speed.
Road accidents, particularly those involving passenger vehicles carrying multiple occupants, remain a significant concern across various districts of Uttar Pradesh. Such incidents often highlight issues related to road safety, vehicle maintenance, and adherence to traffic regulations, especially during large gatherings like weddings and festivals where transport arrangements can be strained.
The area where the accident occurred is known for its rural terrain, and the late-night timing of the incident may have contributed to the severity of the crash. Investigations are expected to shed light on the precise cause of the driver’s loss of control and whether any external factors played a role. The police are collecting statements from witnesses and survivors to piece together the sequence of events that culminated in this loss of life and widespread injuries.
