Students residing in Jawaharlal Nehru University’s (JNU) Shipra hostel have lodged a formal complaint with the hostel warden, detailing severe concerns regarding the quality of food and hygiene standards in the mess. According to details received by The Chenab Times, students reported a persistent pattern of issues within the hostel mess, encompassing not only food contamination with insects and cockroaches but also deficiencies in meal availability and overall cleanliness. These concerns have led some women residents to report experiencing gastrointestinal ailments such as diarrhea and dysentery, which they attribute to the compromised food and water conditions.
Danish Ali, Joint Secretary of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union (JNUSU), corroborated the students’ grievances, stating that he had personally encountered similar problems with food and water quality during his time at Shipra Hostel. He indicated that complaints about these issues have been raised previously, highlighting a recurring problem that requires urgent attention.
Beyond the immediate food-related concerns, the students have also raised alarm bells regarding the provision of drinking water. They have submitted a demand for the prompt repair and thorough cleaning of all water coolers, alongside the installation of reverse osmosis (RO) filters to ensure access to clean and safe drinking water. Furthermore, the students have called for the consistent availability of water on a 24-hour basis and a commitment to regular and comprehensive cleaning of the entire hostel premises.
In their communication to the warden, the residents have implored for an expeditious inspection of the hostel and mess facilities. They seek immediate corrective measures to address the identified shortcomings and have requested the convening of a general body meeting at the earliest opportunity. This meeting is intended to facilitate a detailed discussion of the students’ complaints and to formulate effective remedial steps to improve living conditions within the hostel.
