The Himachal Pradesh Sainik Welfare Department has disbursed financial aid and grants totaling Rs 17.09 crore to 2,263 beneficiaries during the financial year 2025-26, encompassing various welfare schemes for defence personnel and their families.
Information was available with The Chenab Times detailing the department’s implementation of a comprehensive suite of financial assistance and welfare measures. These initiatives are designed to provide robust social security, effective rehabilitation support, and timely aid to both serving and retired defence personnel, as well as their dependents.
Financial Assistance Breakdown
Significant allocations have been made across multiple schemes. Under the Old Age Pension Scheme, a sum of Rs 6.13 crore was distributed among 968 beneficiaries, ensuring financial stability for elderly veterans. In recognition of exceptional service and acts of bravery, Rs 3 crore has been released to 1,084 gallantry award winners from the state.
Further substantial support was extended to the families of fallen or disabled soldiers. The government allocated Rs 7.62 crore to 57 dependents of defence personnel who were killed or disabled in action. Additionally, 154 War-Jagir beneficiaries received Rs 20.83 lakh, providing continued support to those with specific war-related entitlements. The department also extended Rs 6 lakh for the maintenance of Paraplegic Rehabilitation Centres located in Pune and Mohali, underscoring a commitment to comprehensive care.
In cases of service-related demise, the department provides immediate assistance of Rs 75,000 to the Next of Kin of Armed Forces personnel. The upkeep and maintenance of essential Sainik Welfare Buildings have also been prioritized, with Rs 6.74 lakh allocated to ensure the continued accessibility of support services for beneficiaries.
Support for Aspiring Youth
Beyond direct welfare, the state has amplified its efforts to support young individuals aspiring to join the Armed Forces. During the 2025-26 financial year, Rs 2.28 crore has been sanctioned for the organization of Army Recruitment Rallies across several key districts, including Kangra, Hamirpur, Mandi, and Shimla. These rallies are crucial for identifying and recruiting potential candidates from across the state.
A significant financial boost of Rs 10.26 crore has been provided to the Major Somnath Sharma Training Academy, situated in Barchwar, Mandi. This funding is earmarked for strengthening the training and preparatory facilities available to Armed Forces aspirants. The academy plays a pivotal role in equipping young men and women with the necessary skills and guidance to successfully navigate the rigorous selection processes for military service.
