An auto-rickshaw driver lost his life and another man sustained injuries when a speeding car collided with two vehicles in the Sukhdev Vihar area of southeast Delhi on Saturday morning. The incident occurred around 7 am.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that a preliminary report indicated the car first struck an auto-rickshaw and subsequently hit a cycle rickshaw. The deceased has been identified as 45-year-old Md Kalam, a resident of New Friends Colony, whose auto-rickshaw was directly involved in the collision. The injured individual, Md Bablu, resides in the vicinity of the Sukhdev Vihar metro station.
According to police, a PCR call was received at 7:15 am detailing the accident. A tea seller, who was present approximately 10 to 20 metres from the crash site, informed the authorities that two cars were allegedly engaged in a race. The witness claimed that one of the racing cars went out of control and rammed into the other vehicles. The tea seller also reported that four individuals exited the car following the crash and fled the scene in the second car.
Following the accident, police found both the car and the auto-rickshaw at the location. A crime team subsequently conducted an inspection of the scene. Md Kalam was transported to Escorts Hospital, where medical professionals declared him deceased. His body is being transferred to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for a post-mortem examination. Authorities have stated that an investigation into the incident is currently underway to determine the precise sequence of events and identify the individuals involved.
The area where the accident occurred is a moderately busy urban thoroughfare, underscoring the potential dangers of high-speed driving in densely populated zones. Such incidents often bring renewed attention to traffic law enforcement and the implementation of measures aimed at curbing dangerous driving practices, including street racing. The police are expected to review CCTV footage from the surrounding areas to aid in tracing the other vehicle and the occupants of the car involved in the fatal collision. The recovered car is undergoing forensic examination to gather further evidence. The investigation will likely focus on establishing the speed of the car and identifying its owner and driver. The tragic loss of Md Kalam highlights the vulnerability of auto-rickshaw drivers and other road users to the recklessness of a few individuals who disregard traffic rules and endanger public safety. The police have appealed to the public for any information that could assist in their investigation.
