Puttaparthi, Andhra Pradesh – A significant drinking water project, valued at ₹136 crore, has been launched in the Puttaparthi constituency of Andhra Pradesh. The initiative aims to bolster the supply of safe and adequate drinking water to the region, addressing long-standing water scarcity issues.
The project is part of a broader commitment to enhancing water infrastructure and ensuring access to potable water for the residents of Puttaparthi and surrounding areas. Details regarding the specific villages and the timeline for the project’s completion are expected to be released soon, with local authorities emphasizing the urgency and importance of this development.
This development comes as the Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust has historically been involved in significant water supply initiatives in the Anantapur district, which includes Puttaparthi. In 2013, an ₹80 crore project was undertaken to supply purified drinking water to 118 villages across the Bukkapatnam, Kothacheruvu, and Puttaparthi mandals. This earlier project drew water from the Chitravati Balancing Reservoir at Peddakotla and involved the laying of 411 kilometers of pipelines to serve an estimated population of 2.5 lakh people.
The Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust’s extensive work in water management in the Anantapur district dates back to the mid-1990s. A landmark project initiated in March 1995 aimed to provide safe drinking water to drought-prone villages, involving the laying of over 2,000 kilometers of pipelines and constructing numerous sumps, balancing reservoirs, and overhead tanks. This project, which benefited approximately one million people across 731 villages, was lauded by the Government of India and even featured in its Ninth Five Year Plan.
These past efforts underscore the persistent challenges faced by the region due to its arid climate and the declining groundwater tables, often exacerbated by fluoride contamination. The Sri Sathya Sai initiatives have been crucial in mitigating these issues, often stepping in where groundwater was scarce or unfit for consumption.
The newly launched ₹136 crore project is anticipated to further augment the water supply infrastructure, potentially incorporating advanced treatment methods and expanded distribution networks to reach a larger population and address any remaining gaps in water accessibility. The scale of the investment suggests a comprehensive approach to water security in the region, reflecting the state government’s focus on rural development and public health.
Further details about the project’s scope, the implementing agencies, and the specific beneficiaries will be made available as the project progresses. The initiative is expected to significantly improve the quality of life for residents by ensuring a reliable and safe source of drinking water.
