India Gripped by Severe Heatwave; PM Modi Urges Nationwide Precautions

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed to citizens across India to exercise extreme caution as severe heatwave conditions persist in several parts of the country. The directive comes amid soaring temperatures that have prompted advisories for vulnerable populations and calls for community support.

Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the Prime Minister, through a series of posts on the social media platform X, stressed the importance of staying alert and taking necessary preventive measures. He specifically advised people to remain hydrated and to minimize exposure to direct sunlight, particularly during the peak afternoon hours.

Prime Minister Modi highlighted the increased risks faced by children, the elderly, and individuals engaged in outdoor labour due to the extreme weather. He cautioned against dismissing symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, weakness, and profound fatigue, noting that these could escalate into severe conditions like heatstroke if not promptly addressed.

The Prime Minister’s advisory also included practical guidance, urging people to carry drinking water when venturing outdoors and to extend assistance to others by offering water during the prevailing intense heat. He further encouraged citizens to provide immediate help to anyone exhibiting signs of heat-related illness, which involves moving them to a cool or shaded location and ensuring swift access to water, oral rehydration solutions (ORS), and necessary medical care.

Additionally, Prime Minister Modi appealed to the public to maintain regular contact with elderly family members, reminding them to stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day, ensure adequate hydration, and get sufficient rest. Emphasizing the need for compassion towards all living beings, he called upon citizens to care for birds and animals by placing bowls of water outside their homes, shops, offices, balconies, and terraces.

The severe heatwave has affected numerous regions across India. Data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) indicates that Banda in Uttar Pradesh recorded a maximum temperature of 47.4 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, positioning it among the hottest locations in the country. According to IMD standards, a heatwave is declared when temperatures in the plains surpass 45 degrees Celsius, while temperatures exceeding 47 degrees Celsius are classified as a severe heatwave.
