Chennai, May 31: The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) has voiced concerns regarding Tamil Nadu Minister for Sports Development, Aadhav Arjuna, simultaneously holding positions as both a regulator and an administrator. This dual role has drawn sharp criticism from the opposition party, which alleges a potential conflict of interest.
AIADMK leader Inbadurai, on Sunday, May 31, 2026, took to social media to highlight the issue. He pointed out that Minister Arjuna continues to hold the office of the president of an organization while also serving as a regulatory authority in a related capacity. The AIADMK maintains that such a situation is untenable and raises questions about the impartiality and transparency of the minister’s functions.
This development comes amidst a period of political flux in Tamil Nadu, with recent reports indicating significant defections from the AIADMK to the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), the party led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay. AIADMK leaders have accused the TVK of engaging in “horse trading” by luring their party members with promises of nominations in local body elections and appointments to government welfare boards. Minister Aadhav Arjuna, however, has defended these inductions, claiming that the AIADMK cadres are disillusioned with their current leadership and view the TVK as the true successor to the party’s legacy.
The controversy over Minister Arjuna’s dual role is not the first time he has been in the spotlight. In September 2025, he faced legal challenges after posting a controversial message on social media following a stampede at a rally in Karur that resulted in numerous deaths. The post, which urged a “youth revolution” and drew comparisons to events in Nepal and Sri Lanka, led to a First Information Report (FIR) being filed against him under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. However, the Madras High Court later quashed the FIR, deeming the post to be protected political dissent.
Minister Arjuna, who is also the General Secretary for Election Campaign Management of the TVK, has been a prominent figure in the party’s ascent. He was elected as the Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the Villivakkam constituency in Chennai in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election. His political journey includes previous affiliations with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) before joining the TVK in January 2025.
The recent political maneuvering has seen several AIADMK MLAs and functionaries, including former ministers, joining the TVK. Minister Arjuna has attributed these defections to a “political conspiracy” between the DMK and AIADMK, alleging secret power-sharing talks. He further claimed that nearly 90 percent of AIADMK cadre are looking to join the TVK, driven by dissatisfaction with their current leadership’s alignment with the DMK and a desire for “clean governance.”.
Meanwhile, the Congress party, an alliance partner of the TVK government, has expressed disapproval of the alleged “horse trading” tactics. Congress MP Jyothimani criticized the TVK over the allegations, stating that the party cannot support such methods. The issue of defections and alleged political maneuvering continues to be a point of contention, with the AIADMK accusing the ruling party of undermining democratic principles.
The portfolio allocation for Minister Arjuna in the new government includes Public Works, Highways, Minor Ports, and Sports Development. This is in addition to his role as a key strategist within the TVK. The political landscape in Tamil Nadu remains dynamic, with such controversies and realignments shaping the ongoing political discourse.
