Himachal Pradesh is anticipating further spells of heavy rain, hailstorms, and thunderstorms on Sunday, with the state’s Meteorological Department issuing a yellow weather alert. This advisory signals the potential for significant weather disturbances across several districts.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the yellow alert specifically covers the districts of Shimla, Kullu, Solan, Mandi, Sirmour, Kinnaur, and Lahaul and Spiti. Residents in these areas are cautioned about the possibility of heavy rainfall accompanied by hailstorm and thunderstorms in isolated locations.
The adverse weather conditions have already impacted various parts of the state over the preceding 24 hours. Precipitation was recorded across numerous areas, leading to a noticeable drop in temperatures and bringing relief from warmer conditions in some regions.
Among the highest rainfall figures reported, Naina Devi in Bilaspur district recorded 46.4 mm. Other areas also experienced significant rainfall, with Paonta Sahib receiving 20.4 mm, Una registering 20 mm, and Bilaspur measuring 18.4 mm. Kasauli recorded 18 mm, Sundernagar 7.9 mm, and the state capital Shimla received 2.2 mm of rain.
The consistent rainfall has caused temperatures to fall throughout Himachal Pradesh. Shimla reported a minimum temperature of 12°C, while Dharamsala registered 16.8°C. Manali experienced cooler temperatures at 11.1°C, Solan at 15°C, and Kangra at 18.7°C. Bilaspur recorded 18.5°C, Nahan at 15.9°C, and Kufri noted a low of 8.6°C. Further afield, Bhuntar recorded 16.5°C, Paonta Sahib 21°C, Kalpa 9°C, and Keylong 7°C.
The coldest region in the state was identified as the village of Kukumseri in the Lahaul and Spiti district, where the minimum temperature dropped to a chilly 3.9°C. This marks a significant temperature variation across the hilly terrain.
The meteorological department’s yellow alert is an indication for authorities to remain vigilant and prepared for potential disruptions. Such advisories are typically issued when weather conditions are likely to cause moderate disruption, but are not severe enough to warrant an amber or red alert. They serve as a precursor for potential impacts on daily life, agriculture, and transportation.
Himachal Pradesh, known for its picturesque landscapes and tourism, is often susceptible to extreme weather events during the monsoon and pre-monsoon seasons. Heavy rainfall can lead to landslides, road closures, and disruptions in power supply, particularly in the more remote and hilly areas. The department’s continuous monitoring and issuance of alerts aim to mitigate risks and ensure public safety.
The current weather pattern is attributed to a combination of atmospheric conditions, including the presence of a western disturbance, which is a common phenomenon affecting the northwestern parts of India. These disturbances interact with moisture-laden winds, leading to cloud formation and precipitation.
Authorities in the affected districts are expected to monitor the situation closely and take necessary precautionary measures. This includes advising people against venturing into vulnerable areas and ensuring that disaster response teams are on standby. The agricultural sector, a significant contributor to the state’s economy, is also directly impacted by such weather, with heavy rains and hailstorms potentially damaging standing crops.
The forecast for the coming days will continue to be closely watched as the state navigates through this period of inclement weather. The Met department will provide further updates on the intensity and duration of the rainfall and thunderstorms, guiding local administrations and the public in their preparedness efforts.
