Uttar Pradesh National Para-Athlete Chirag Tyagi Found Dead in Ghaziabad; Fellow Athlete Arrested

National-level para-athlete Chirag Tyagi, a celebrated gold medallist, was found dead near Sai Upvan in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, on Saturday. Police have since arrested a fellow para-athlete, Yash Khatik, in connection with the shooting death, with preliminary investigations suggesting a motive of revenge stemming from a document verification dispute.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the 24-year-old Tyagi, who hailed from Basantpur Sethli village in Muradnagar, had recently returned from a training camp in Pune and arrived in Delhi on May 29. His family reported last speaking to him on Saturday morning, when he indicated he would be home by the afternoon. His mobile phone subsequently became unreachable before authorities informed the family of the incident.

Investigation and Arrest

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), City, Dhawal Jaiswal, stated on Sunday that a preliminary examination of the body and evidence collected from the crime scene indicated that Tyagi had been fatally shot. During the course of the investigation, police detained Yash Khatik on Saturday evening. Khatik, also a para-athlete, had previously trained with Tyagi.

According to DCP Jaiswal, the investigation revealed that Tyagi had lodged a formal complaint against Khatik during a document verification process. This complaint reportedly led to the cancellation of Khatik’s eligibility, fostering resentment and a motive for revenge. During interrogation, the accused allegedly confessed to shooting Tyagi with a pistol.

Ongoing Recovery and Legal Proceedings

Police teams have been actively deployed to locate and recover the weapon used in the commission of the crime. Additional evidence is also being collected from the scene and surrounding areas as part of the ongoing investigation. Authorities have confirmed that further legal proceedings are underway, and all facets of the case are being thoroughly investigated to ensure justice.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the para-athletics community, highlighting the competitive pressures and potential interpersonal conflicts that can arise within elite sports environments. The focus remains on completing the investigation and bringing the case to a swift judicial conclusion.
