SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Police have issued a public advisory alerting citizens to a sophisticated scam operation that utilizes automated silent calls to identify and subsequently target active mobile phone numbers for fraudulent activities.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that cybercriminals are employing automated systems to generate a high volume of calls. When an unsuspecting recipient answers, particularly by uttering “Hello,” the system reportedly flags the number as active. These identified numbers are then allegedly compiled into lists for future exploitation in various scam attempts.
According to the police advisory, these calls are often disconnected immediately after the recipient responds, making it challenging for individuals to ascertain the caller’s intent or origin. However, the activation of the number through such a call can lead to it being targeted with subsequent fraudulent communications, including phishing attempts or other forms of cybercrime.
Authorities are urging the public to exercise caution and refrain from engaging with silent or suspicious calls originating from unknown numbers. Citizens are advised to disconnect such calls promptly without providing any personal information or confirming their identity. The police also recommend blocking numbers that repeatedly make unsolicited calls and maintaining vigilance when receiving communications from unfamiliar sources.
To aid in the combating of cyber fraud, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have appealed to citizens to report any suspicious or fraudulent call numbers through the dedicated “Check & Report” feature available on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP). This reporting mechanism is crucial for law enforcement agencies to track, investigate, and ultimately curb the activities of cybercriminals operating within the region and beyond.
The advisory serves as a critical reminder for all mobile users to remain vigilant against evolving cyber threats. The strategy of using silent calls to identify active numbers is a covert method designed to bypass immediate suspicion, making the subsequent scam attempts more likely to succeed. By understanding this modus operandi, the public can better protect themselves from falling victim to such digital deceptions.
The National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal provides a centralized platform for citizens to report various types of cybercrimes, including financial fraud, online harassment, and identity theft. The Jammu and Kashmir Police emphasize that active participation from the public in reporting these incidents is vital in building a robust defense against cyber offenders.
This initiative by the police highlights their commitment to enhancing cybersecurity awareness and providing effective mechanisms for reporting and addressing cyber threats. The focus remains on empowering citizens with knowledge and tools to safeguard their digital footprint and prevent financial or personal data compromises.
