Delhi: Brinda Karat Alleges Illegal Detention of Student Ahead of CJP Protest, Seeks Police Action

CPI(M) leader Brinda Karat has lodged a formal complaint with the Delhi Police Commissioner, Satish Golchha, seeking disciplinary action against personnel attached to the New Rajinder Nagar police station. Karat alleges that a young postgraduate student was subjected to illegal detention, interrogation, and surveillance in the period leading up to a planned protest by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP).

Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that Aahana Singh Kaith, who had recently completed her master’s degree examinations, was approached by police officers on June 5. The encounter reportedly took place at a gym in New Rajinder Nagar, after which she was taken to a nearby parking lot for questioning.

According to the complaint filed by Karat, the student was questioned about her political affiliations and cautioned against participating in the CJP demonstration. Kaith reportedly informed the officers that she had no plans to attend the protest. However, the police allegedly stated that they possessed information suggesting she was planning to participate.

The complaint further details that officers requested Kaith to provide information about other potential attendees of the protest and demanded access to her mobile phone. Although the student initially objected to her phone being checked, she later complied and showed her WhatsApp messages to the police. Subsequently, she was allegedly warned that she was being placed under surveillance.

Adding to the allegations, Karat claimed that later the same evening, a police officer visited Kaith’s residence. The officer allegedly instructed her to share her live location with the police and warned her against leaving her home without prior notification. The following day, the officer reportedly returned to the student’s residence and again demanded information about her whereabouts.

Brinda Karat characterized the incident as a grave misuse of police authority. She stated in her letter that a young woman was apprehended by predominantly male police officers without a warrant. The student was subjected to interrogation, also without a warrant, and her phone was examined, constituting a violation of her privacy without any legal justification. Karat further alleged that Kaith was placed under surveillance and effectively subjected to virtual house arrest without any charges being formally laid or any explanation provided.

Karat emphasized that even if the student had intended to participate in the demonstration, it is her fundamental democratic right to do so, and the police have no legal standing to prevent her. She has therefore called for immediate action against the police officers involved and against those who allegedly issued the instructions for the detention and surveillance.

As of the time of this report, the Delhi Police had not issued any official response to the allegations made by Brinda Karat.
