Panic gripped the Gajner area of Kanpur Dehat on Thursday morning after a mortar-like object was discovered near a waterlogged stretch along the Non river. The find triggered a significant security response, with officials immediately cordoning off the area and summoning a bomb disposal squad.
The suspicious item was first spotted by local residents near Jaswapur village who were fishing in a pond-like area connected to the river. One villager, Anil Kumar, alerted the police via Dial 112 after noticing the object submerged near the water body. Prompted by the information, a large police contingent, led by the Gajner station house officer and other officials, arrived at the scene and established a precautionary cordon, restricting public movement.
According to Circle Officer Sanjay Kumar Singh, an anti-sabotage check team, the bomb disposal squad, and forensic experts were called to inspect the object. Initial observations suggested the item resembled a mortar shell, a type of explosive military device. Deputy Superintendent of Police Sanjay Singh confirmed that the recovered item appeared to be a mortar, but emphasized that expert examination was necessary to determine its exact identity and condition.
The situation briefly escalated when a local youth reportedly picked up the object and attempted to run with it before being intercepted by police. Officers warned the youth that the object could be dangerous.
Given the potential seriousness of the discovery, a bomb detection and disposal squad was dispatched from Jhansi to Kanpur Dehat. Superintendent of Police Shraddha Narayan Pandey stated that the object was found near a water body connected to the Non river, and the security headquarters was immediately informed. While the exact nature of the object remained undetermined at that point, the bomb detection team had prima facie declared it non-explosive.
The recovered item has been safely secured, and a specialized disposal team from the security headquarters is scheduled to conduct a detailed analysis to ascertain its origin and nature. The police have advised villagers to stay clear of the suspicious item until the investigation is complete and have increased monitoring in the surrounding areas.
The Times of India reported on Wednesday that the recovered item was discovered in a pond, and a bomb squad along with a Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team were summoned. The newspaper also noted that Deputy SP Sanjay Singh stated that expert views were being taken to confirm the object’s identity and condition.
The exact details regarding the object’s origin and whether it poses any active threat will become clear only after the investigation report is received. The police, FSL, and bomb squad teams are actively engaged in examining the entire matter.
