RAMBAN, June 23 – A comprehensive mock drill simulating emergency response scenarios was conducted across Ramban district on Tuesday, focusing on key locations along National Highway-44 and Yatra Niwas Chanderkote. The exercise aimed to bolster preparedness and refine coordination among security forces and disaster management agencies in anticipation of the upcoming Shri Amarnath Yatra.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the drill involved the deployment of advanced surveillance technologies, including drones, and the utilization of dog squads to enhance security assessments. Participating personnel represented a collaborative effort between the Jammu and Kashmir Police, the Indian Army, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Home Guards, and the Fire and Emergency Services Department.
The primary objective of the extensive exercise was to enhance the interoperability and swiftness of response mechanisms among various agencies tasked with ensuring the safety and security of pilgrims. Officials emphasized that improved coordination is crucial for managing any unforeseen incidents or threats that may arise during the pilgrimage, which is a significant undertaking for thousands of devotees annually.
The Shri Amarnath Yatra is slated to commence on July 3. The Ramban sector of National Highway-44 is a critical artery for the pilgrimage, witnessing the passage of a substantial number of devotees en route to the holy cave shrine located in the Himalayas. The preparedness exercise underscored the strategic importance of this stretch.
Authorities confirmed that Chanderkote and Lambar Ground in Banihal are designated as major Yatra facilities. These locations will host several community kitchens, known as langars, to provide sustenance to pilgrims. The Yatra Niwas at Chanderkote, developed by the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board, possesses the capacity to accommodate over 5,000 pilgrims. This facility is designed to serve as a vital shelter and support point in the event of highway blockages due to adverse weather conditions, road disruptions, or any other situation that might impact the usual travel routes from Pahalgam and Baltal.
