Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah convened a high-level meeting to assess the progress of ongoing efforts to conserve and manage the region’s vital lakes. The 27th Board of Directors meeting of the Jammu & Kashmir Lake Conservation and Management Authority (LCMA) focused on crucial policy, administrative, and infrastructure-related matters concerning the Dal, Nigeen, Khushalsar, and Gilsar lakes.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the meeting, held at SKICC, was attended by key government officials including Advisor to the Chief Minister Nasir Aslam Wani, Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo, Additional Chief Secretary to the Chief Minister Dheeraj Gupta, Additional Chief Secretary Finance Shailendra Kumar, Commissioner Secretary Forests, Environment and Ecology Sheetal Nanda, and Commissioner Secretary Housing and Urban Development Mandeep Kaur, alongside other senior officers.
During the session, the board thoroughly reviewed the action taken on decisions from its previous meeting. A significant portion of the deliberation was dedicated to evaluating the progress of major conservation and restoration projects. These initiatives include the implementation of the Integrated Management Plan for the Dal-Nigeen lake ecosystem, eco-development of lakeside hamlets, enhancement of sewerage infrastructure, and ongoing lake cleaning operations, all aimed at improving the ecological health of these natural water bodies.
Chief Minister Abdullah underscored the necessity of sustained institutional coordination, meticulous scientific planning, and timely execution for the effective conservation of Jammu and Kashmir’s lakes. He issued directives to the concerned departments and the LCMA to accelerate the pace of ongoing projects. Emphasis was placed on ensuring strict adherence to environmental safeguards and all statutory procedures throughout the execution phases.
The meeting also featured detailed discussions on several agenda items aimed at strengthening the operational capacity of the LCMA. Key areas addressed included the modernization of sewerage management systems, specific conservation strategies for the Khushalsar and Gilsar lakes, and the overall enhancement of institutional capabilities to manage these sensitive ecosystems more effectively.
In response to the deliberations, the Chief Minister instructed that any proposals requiring further examination or refinement should be revised and resubmitted promptly, incorporating the observations and suggestions made during the meeting. This approach aims to ensure that all conservation plans are robust and well-considered.
Reaffirming the government’s firm commitment to the preservation of the fragile lake ecosystems, Chief Minister Abdullah stressed that all conservation efforts must be rigorously guided by scientific assessment, a commitment to environmental sustainability, and the long-term public interest. He also called for the establishment of a robust system for the regular monitoring of all ongoing conservation works.
Furthermore, the Chief Minister emphasized the critical importance of close inter-departmental coordination to ensure that tangible and measurable improvements are achieved in the conservation and management of Jammu and Kashmir’s lakes. This collaborative approach is expected to streamline efforts and enhance the effectiveness of conservation strategies across different government bodies.
