A newly built road in Talegaon Dabhade, a town near Pune, sustained damage when a water pipeline test caused a significant eruption of water. The incident, which occurred during a planned technical test for a water supply scheme, led to the road surface cracking and water gushing upwards. Videos of the event circulated widely on social media, prompting initial concerns of a road cave-in.
Administrative Clarification on Road Incident
The Talegaon Municipal Council (TMC) administration clarified that the event was not an accident or a result of substandard construction but rather an occurrence during a scheduled technical test of an outlet line for a newly constructed water tank in the Sambhajinagar area. Officials and technical staff, along with representatives of the concerned contractor, were present during the testing phase.
Information available with The Chenab Times indicates that the main drinking water pipeline in question was installed approximately a year and a half prior to the incident. The road, a busy market thoroughfare, had been asphalted shortly before the final testing to minimize disruption to citizens. As a precautionary measure, traffic was temporarily suspended along the route before the test commenced.
Cause of Damage Identified as Faulty Connection
According to reports, the incident occurred shortly after water was released from the tank. High pressure caused water to surface through the ground, leading to the road damage. Subsequent investigations by officials revealed that two sections of the pipeline had not been properly connected by the contractor, causing the joint to fail under pressure. Upon noticing the water surfacing, the technical team immediately shut off the main valve to stop the water flow.
The municipal council has stated that the contractor will be held responsible for the entire cost of repairing the damaged pipeline and reconstructing the affected road. Necessary measurements for the repairs have been taken, and the administration has indicated that the remaining work is scheduled to be completed, after which the contractor will restore the road and surrounding areas to their original condition.
Infrastructure Project and Oversight Concerns
The incident has raised questions regarding the quality of infrastructure development and project oversight within the region. The new water supply scheme was reportedly scheduled for inauguration the following week, with the pipeline failure occurring just before its commissioning. Residents expressed concern over the quality of construction and the supervision of civic infrastructure projects.
The Talegaon Dabhade Municipal Council Chief Officer, Girish Dapekar, has affirmed that the full costs associated with the repair of the pipeline and the reconstruction of the damaged road will be recovered from the contractor responsible for the work. The council is taking a serious view of the lapse, emphasizing that such failures undermine public trust in developmental projects.
