Jammu and Kashmir: Cloudbursts Trigger Flash Floods in Anantnag’s Shangus and Pahalgam

Two separate cloudbursts struck the Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday evening, leading to flash floods in the Shangus and Pahalgam areas. The events caused damage to agricultural land and inundated several huts and hotels.

The first cloudburst occurred in the upper reaches of Chatergul in Shangus, causing the Aaripath stream to swell. Floodwaters, carrying mud and debris, inundated paddy fields, orchards, and parts of nearby residential areas, resulting in damage to standing crops. Approximately an hour later, a second cloudburst hit the Overa Wildlife Sanctuary in Pahalgam, leading to a sudden surge in the Overa Nallah. This overflowing stream inundated several huts and hotels, causing panic in the vicinity.

This incident occurred amidst a period of wet weather across Kashmir. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had forecast spells of rain and thunderstorms in the Pahalgam region, prompting authorities to advise caution in vulnerable areas, especially near streams and mountain slopes.

In Pahalgam, tourists staying in hotels near the affected streams were reported to be safe. The administration has advised residents and visitors to stay away from the banks of nallahs and rivers and to take necessary safety measures.
