Government and private schools across Doda district remained closed on Wednesday, July 29, as authorities took precautionary measures in view of continuous rainfall and the prevailing adverse weather conditions. In neighbouring Kishtwar district, schools were also ordered to remain closed, except those located within the Kishtwar city area between Malipeth and Cherhar.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, the Chief Education Officer (CEO), Doda, issued the closure order following directions from the District Development Commissioner, citing the need to ensure the safety and security of students and school staff. The order also stated that online classes would continue as per the prescribed schedule in all schools across the district.
In Kishtwar, the Chief Education Officer issued a separate order after the district administration warned of continuous heavy rainfall, slippery road conditions and the possibility of shooting stones in vulnerable areas. The order was issued in compliance with the directions of the Deputy Commissioner, Kishtwar.
However, the Kishtwar administration allowed schools located within the Kishtwar city stretch from Malipeth to Cherhar to function normally. The order clarified that official work in educational institutions, wherever required, should continue without disruption.
The temporary closure comes as several parts of Jammu and Kashmir continue to experience active monsoon conditions, with authorities monitoring the risk of landslides, flash floods and road blockages in hilly districts. Local administrations have been issuing advisories urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel and remain alert in vulnerable areas.
District administrations have advised parents, students and school authorities to follow official updates as weather conditions evolve. Authorities have emphasised that the precautionary measures are intended to minimise risks associated with heavy rainfall and related hazards in the mountainous districts.
