Varanasi police have registered a case against prominent Members of Parliament Rahul Gandhi, Pappu Yadav, and Awadhesh Prasad for allegedly insulting Sanatan Dharma and hurting religious sentiments during an opposition protest within Parliament premises.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the First Information Report (FIR) was filed at the Kotwali police station based on a formal complaint submitted by a group of seers. The seers alleged that the MPs committed acts intended to insult Sanatan Dharma.
The complaint specifically names Lok Sabha MP Rahul Gandhi, Independent MP from Purnia, Bihar, Rajesh Ranjan, popularly known as Pappu Yadav, and Samajwadi Party MP from the Faizabad seat in Uttar Pradesh, Awadhesh Prasad. These allegations stem from an opposition protest staged on Friday.
According to seer Jagatguru Balak Das, the actions attributed to Pappu Yadav in the Parliament were particularly offensive to followers of Sanatan Dharma. He stated that the manner in which Lord Ram and Sanatan Dharma were allegedly insulted in the House was unforgivable and deeply hurtful to religious sentiments, prompting their demand for a formal case registration.
The protest on Friday involved MPs from the INDIA bloc, including Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and former party president Rahul Gandhi. Their demonstration was against alleged theft of donations meant for the Ram Temple in Ayodhya and in solidarity with student agitators who faced police action during their march to Parliament on July 20.
During the protest, opposition MPs reportedly staged a skit designed to highlight the issue of temple donation theft. As part of this performance, donation boxes were placed in front of the Makar Dwar entrance to Parliament. Media reports indicated that MPs, including Rahul Gandhi, placed money into these boxes. A saffron-clad Pappu Yadav was depicted as having placed money into the boxes and then allegedly slipped it into his pockets, an action the seers claim constitutes an insult.
The INDIA bloc MPs also used the protest to demand the resignation of Home Minister Amit Shah and questioned his absence from parliamentary proceedings. Slogans such as “Amit Shah istifa do” (Amit Shah resign), “Amit Shah sadan mein aao” (Amit Shah come to the House), and “Chadhawa chor, gaddi chorh” (donation thief, vehicle thief) were reportedly raised.
Among the lawmakers participating in the protest were Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Samajwadi Party’s Awadhesh Prasad and Dharmendra Yadav, and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha’s Mahua Maji. They stood behind a banner that read, “Amit Shah sadan se gayab kyun?” (Why is Amit Shah missing from the House?). The FIR filed in Varanasi is a direct consequence of the alleged actions during this protest, which the complainants deem a grave offense against religious sentiments.
