A suspect apprehended by Himachal Pradesh police in connection with a Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) case has escaped from custody after pushing an officer at a police station in Ludhiana, Punjab. The incident has prompted a joint search operation by both the Ludhiana and Himachal Pradesh police forces.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the accused, identified as Rahul Kumar, a resident of Palampur in Himachal Pradesh’s Kangra district, was brought to Ludhiana for further investigation. He had been arrested by the Kangra police on August 13 in a case where over six grams of heroin were allegedly recovered from him.
According to the complaint lodged by Assistant Sub-Inspector Rakesh Kumar of the Kangra police, the team had brought Kumar to Ludhiana and upon their vehicle entering the gate of Police Division 7, the suspect forcefully pushed the policeman seated behind him. This allowed Kumar to escape from the premises.
Following the escape, extensive searches were initiated by police teams in the surrounding areas of Ludhiana. Authorities have also been meticulously reviewing CCTV footage from cameras installed within and around the police station in an effort to trace the fugitive’s movements and apprehend him. Despite these efforts, the suspect remains at large.
On Sunday, based on the complaint filed by ASI Rakesh Kumar, the Ludhiana police registered a case against Rahul Kumar. The charges have been filed under Section 262 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which pertains to escape or attempt to escape from custody. The registration of this case marks the formal initiation of efforts to locate and re-arrest the suspect.
The Kangra police had initially registered the NDPS case against Kumar on August 13, the same day he was apprehended and subsequently brought to Ludhiana. The recovery of heroin in the initial case signifies the gravity of the charges he faces in Himachal Pradesh. The escape from police custody in another state adds a new dimension to the legal proceedings against him.
This incident highlights potential security lapses in the transfer and custody of high-profile suspects, particularly those involved in drug-related offenses. Law enforcement agencies are expected to re-evaluate protocols to prevent similar occurrences in the future. The Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which replaced the Indian Penal Code, introduced updated legal provisions that are now being applied in this case.
The search for Rahul Kumar is ongoing, with multiple police units coordinating their efforts. The investigation will likely focus on how the escape was facilitated and whether any external assistance was involved. The outcome of the search and the subsequent legal proceedings will be closely watched by authorities concerned with inter-state law enforcement cooperation and drug trafficking investigations.
The focus remains on apprehending the suspect to ensure he faces trial for the charges in both Himachal Pradesh and Punjab. The cooperation between police forces of different states is crucial in resolving such cases that span across jurisdictional boundaries. The precise details of the escape and the subsequent investigation are expected to be further clarified as more information becomes available.
