Punjab Bandh Over Sikh Prisoners’ Release Sees Mixed Response in Ludhiana

A call for a state-wide shutdown in Punjab on August 21, initiated by the Qaumi Insaaf Morcha to advocate for the release of Sikh prisoners, received a varied reception across Ludhiana. While certain political factions and transport operators expressed support for the bandh, others maintained a wait-and-watch approach.

Information was available with The Chenab Times that the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the group Waris Punjab De lent their backing to the protest. Manpreet Singh Ayali of Waris Punjab De stated that his organisation would support the Qaumi Insaaf Morcha’s call, characterizing the demand for the release of Sikh prisoners as just. He questioned the continued incarceration of these individuals, urging their freedom.

Maheshinder Singh Grewal, a senior SAD leader, commented on the necessity for governmental action, alleging considerable delays by the Central Government in addressing the issue. Grewal specifically highlighted the case of Balwant Singh Rajoana, who has been imprisoned for years, and demanded a clear decision on his release. He stated that the SAD supports the bandh call.

District Congress president Sanjay Talwar indicated that he was unable to commit to supporting or opposing the bandh, as such decisions are typically made at the state leadership level. He stated that his position would be contingent on the state party’s directive.

Raghbir Singh Benipal, president of the Jamhuri Kisan Sabha Punjab, raised concerns about a perceived focus on the release of one particular individual, while numerous other ‘Bandi Singhs’ (imprisoned Sikhs) remain incarcerated across various jails. He stated that the organisation would neither oppose nor support the bandh call, suggesting a broader approach to prisoner releases.

Meanwhile, the Small Scale District Bus Operator Welfare Association declared its support for the bandh. Jaswinder Singh Grewal, the association’s general secretary for Punjab, announced that approximately 800 buses would be withdrawn from service between 7 am and 2 pm on August 21 in solidarity with the shutdown. This decision by the bus operators is expected to impact daily commuting and transport services across the district.

The Qaumi Insaaf Morcha has been actively campaigning for the release of Sikh prisoners, particularly those who have completed their sentences. The movement has gained traction among various Sikh organizations and political groups who believe that these individuals are being unjustly detained. The call for a Punjab bandh is part of a broader strategy to exert pressure on both the state and central governments to address their demands.

The issue of Sikh prisoners has been a recurring point of political and social discourse in Punjab. Various groups have raised concerns over the prolonged detention of individuals convicted in relation to past militancy-related incidents, especially those whose sentences have expired or who have served significant periods in prison. The Qaumi Insaaf Morcha represents a collective voice advocating for clemency and the resolution of these cases.

The mixed response in Ludhiana reflects the diverse political landscape and the varying priorities of different organisations within the state. While some parties and associations see the bandh as a necessary measure to highlight the urgency of the issue, others prefer a more measured approach or are awaiting clearer directives from their respective leaderships. The participation of bus operators, however, signals a tangible impact on the ground, potentially affecting daily life and economic activities in the region for the duration of the shutdown.

The SAD’s strong endorsement of the bandh, coupled with Waris Punjab De’s support, indicates a potential consolidation of certain political voices behind the Qaumi Insaaf Morcha’s cause. Their statements suggest a unified front in demanding government intervention and a swift resolution to the matter of Sikh prisoners’ release. The Congress’s non-committal stance, pending state-level decisions, highlights the internal deliberations and strategic considerations within the party.

The participation of transport operators is crucial for the effectiveness of any bandh call, as it directly impacts public movement and economic activity. The commitment of around 800 buses to remain off the roads is a significant development that will likely be observed closely by the authorities and the public alike. This move signifies a direct support for the morcha’s objectives and demonstrates the potential disruption caused by such organised shutdowns.

The broader context of the ‘Bandi Singhs’ issue involves historical grievances and ongoing legal battles. The demand for release often stems from perceptions of injustice, lengthy legal processes, and appeals for humanitarian considerations. The Qaumi Insaaf Morcha aims to amplify these voices and ensure that the government addresses the plight of these prisoners with due diligence and compassion. The bandh call serves as a visible manifestation of public sentiment and a tool to pressure the administration towards action.
