Thousands of devotees gathered at the under-construction Kedareswar Mahadev Temple in Etawah, Uttar Pradesh, on Monday, marking the final Monday of the auspicious Hindu month of Sawan. The faithful participated in prayers and offered ‘jalabhishek’ (ritualistic water pouring) amidst significant religious fervor.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that the temple, designed to be a spiritual landmark on the lines of the Kedarnath temple in Uttarakhand, was initiated by Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav. The architectural concept of the temple is based on the ‘Shiva Rekha,’ a spiritual axis believed by temple authorities to extend from Kedarnath in the north to Rameswaram in the south. This axis is said to pass through several significant Shiva temples across India, including Mahakaleshwar in Madhya Pradesh and various temples in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
The inspiration behind the temple’s construction, according to temple priest Bhuvaneshwaran, was to provide a spiritual alternative for devotees who find it challenging to visit the revered Kedarnath shrine due to geographical remoteness, harsh weather conditions, or health reasons. Bhuvaneshwaran noted that the temple aims to serve as a new religious destination for western Uttar Pradesh and the surrounding region, offering year-round accessibility for devotees.
During the preceding three Mondays of Sawan, the temple recorded an estimated footfall of approximately eight lakh visitors each Monday, highlighting its growing popularity. The idol of Lord Shiva installed at the temple has been sourced from the Kali Gandaki region in Nepal. Regular prayers and rituals are conducted by the temple priests.
The temple adheres to South Indian traditions and follows the principles of Shilpa Shastra, with rituals performed according to the Agamas and Shiva Agamas. Notably, certain divine features of the idol, such as the eyebrows, eyes, and matted hair, have been intricately carved directly into the stone.
Temple volunteer Aman Yadav described the scene on Sawan Mondays as exceptionally busy, with large crowds congregating between 6 am and 2 pm, followed by a temporary lull and then another surge in visitors between 4 pm and 8 pm. He mentioned that volunteers were actively engaged in crowd management to ensure a smooth experience for the devotees. Special arrangements and prayer programs were held every Monday evening, lasting for approximately two to two-and-a-half hours.
Yadav further stated that while the primary construction phases are nearing completion, the temple is expected to be fully ready within the next year. Anticipation is also high for potential increased footfall on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan. Specific queues and arrangements have been established for ‘kanwariyas,’ devotees undertaking pilgrimage for Lord Shiva.
Devotees, arriving from various districts including Agra, expressed their spiritual satisfaction and admiration for the temple. Nisha, who visited with her siblings, shared her experience. Anushka, a repeat visitor, conveyed her enjoyment of the ‘darshan’ (viewing of the deity) and expressed hopes for the temple’s future prominence. Raj Kumari, a regular visitor, lauded the temple’s architectural beauty and the quality of its construction, describing the atmosphere as wonderful and fulfilling. She noted that the temple itself serves as the primary attraction for many visitors who feel the divine presence of Lord Shiva universally.
