Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir — Mirwaiz-e-Kashmir Dr. Moulvi Mohammad Umar Farooq has called upon the Jammu and Kashmir administration to prioritize the long-standing demand for an enhanced monthly stipend for MBBS and BDS interns across the Union Territory. The call comes amid growing concerns over the inadequacy of the current remuneration for medical professionals undergoing essential training.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that the current stipend of ₹12,300 per month is deemed insufficient for young doctors who are undertaking significant clinical responsibilities and working extended hours in public healthcare institutions. Dr. Farooq highlighted on the social media platform X that the concerns raised by these interns warrant serious and immediate attention from the government.
A government-constituted committee has previously recommended an upward revision of the stipend. However, the prolonged delay in implementing these recommendations has drawn criticism. Mirwaiz expressed that the protracted wait is difficult to justify, especially considering the dedication and demanding nature of the interns’ duties.
He further emphasized that these young medical professionals play a crucial role in the functioning of public healthcare facilities. Their contributions, Mirwaiz stated, deserve fair recognition and adequate financial compensation, which is currently lacking with the existing stipend structure. He urged the administration to engage constructively with the interns to address their legitimate demand promptly and fairly.
The Mirwaiz also conveyed a strong message to the administration, stressing that ensuring the continuity of patient care should be a paramount consideration. By addressing the interns’ concerns expeditiously, the administration can prevent any potential disruptions in healthcare services, which could adversely affect the patient population relying on these institutions.
