Three construction workers died and 11 others sustained injuries when a scaffolding structure collapsed at an under-construction church in Manji Krishnapuram, near Katpadi, in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday. The incident occurred at a height of approximately 20 feet.
The Chenab Times has learned that the scaffolding was erected to facilitate the work of 20 labourers engaged in the construction of the church’s upper structure. The collapse led to immediate casualties among those working at the site.
Among the deceased were identified as 67-year-old Samuel and his son, 32-year-old Immanuel, also known as Kutty. Both were among the workers present at the site when the structure gave way.
Emergency services were quickly dispatched to the scene. Rescue operations were initiated to extricate those trapped and to provide immediate medical attention to the injured. The injured were transported to a local hospital for treatment. Their conditions are currently being monitored by medical professionals.
The cause of the scaffolding collapse is under investigation. Preliminary reports suggest potential structural deficiencies or an overload on the scaffolding as possible reasons. Authorities are expected to examine the safety protocols and the integrity of the construction materials used at the site. Local police have registered a case and have begun questioning witnesses and site supervisors to ascertain the sequence of events leading to the tragedy.
The under-construction church is located in the Manji Krishnapuram area, a developing locality on the outskirts of Katpadi. The incident has cast a pall over the local community, raising concerns about construction safety standards in the region. Officials from the local administration and labour department are reportedly visiting the site to oversee the investigation and to provide support to the affected families.
The state government has been informed of the incident, and directives have been issued for a thorough inquiry into the matter. Compensation for the victims and their families is also expected to be announced by the relevant authorities. The investigation aims to identify any negligence on the part of the construction company or supervisors responsible for site safety.
