Ten policemen in civvies killed top LeT/TRF militants in Srinagar: IGP

Inspector General of Police Vijay Kumar on Monday said that ten policemen in civvies killed two wanted militants including LeT/TRF commander Mohammad Abbas Sheikh in a gunfight here.

“After receiving information, ten J&K police officers in civilian clothes went there and blocked off the area,” the IGP told reporters in a brief interview. “They had been warned. Militants opened fire, which was met with retaliation, resulting in an encounter, in which the couple was killed.”

He said that Abbas was encouraging young people to join the extremist ranks. “Families and parents were concerned. I urge parents not to let their children to join militant groups, and those who have already left should be returned; we will welcome them,” he stated.

When asked if the duo was engaged in all of Srinagar’s killings, he replied, “absolutely.” “Saqib Manzoor was carrying out assassinations on the orders of the Abbas.”

Mohammad Abbas Sheikh and Saqib Manzoor were both on the police’s list of sought militants this year. Sheikh was a top militant commander from the south Kashmir district, according to sources. He was a resident of Rampur village in Kulgam.

The 45-year-old was one of the most experienced militants, having returned to militancy twice.

Sheikh was a member of the Resistance Front (TRF), which police say is a shadow group of Lashkar-e-Toiba, according to sources. Sheikh was previously associated with Hizbul Mujahideen (LeT).

Sheikh had fled many times in the previous six years after escaping the cordon. They further stated that Saqib was a Srinagar resident.
