According to the military’s media wing, armed gunmen attacked two security forces camps in Pakistan’s restive southern Balochistan region, resulting in a violent exchange of fire in which at least four terrorists and a soldier were killed.
The attacks, which were later claimed by the proscribed Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), took place on Wednesday in Panjgur and Noshki areas. Terrorists attempted to penetrate a security forces camp from two locations in Panjgur, while they attempted to enter a Frontier Corps (FC) position in Noshki and were “promptly responded”.
In a statement, the military’s media wing Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said: “both attacks were successfully repulsed, inflicting heavy casualties on terrorists”.
The shoot-out claimed the lives of four terrorists and a soldier, as well as an officer who was injured in one of the attacks, according to the statement, which also stated that “intermittent firing” was ongoing.
Earlier, a Frontier Corps spokesman reported that two explosions occurred near the camps in Panjgur and Noshki, followed by heavy gunfire.
In a statement, the BLA claimed responsibility for the attacks. Attacks on security forces and installations have recently increased by the separatist group.
The assaults on Wednesday were the latest in a series of such strikes in Balochistan, and they came just a week after ten troops were killed in a terrorist attack on a security checkpoint in the province’s Kech region.
On January 28, bomb blasts in the Sui area of Dera Bugti killed three Levies Force men and a Bugti tribal elder, while eight people were injured.
A grenade attack in Jaffarabad district’s Dera Allahyar town on January 30 injured at least 17 persons, including two police officers.
Balochistan is Pakistan’s largest province in terms of landmass. The multibillion-dollar China-Pakistan Economic Corridor project is also based there.
