On Sunday, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi claimed that 40 lakh Indians died as a result of the government’s “negligence” during the coronavirus pandemic, and requested that all families of the deceased be compensated with four lakh rupees each.
Mr Gandhi took to Twitter to share a screenshot of a New York Times article claiming that India is obstructing the WHO’s efforts to make the global Covid death tally public.
“Modi ji neither tells the truth nor allows people to speak for themselves. He still falsely claims that no one died as a result of a lack of oxygen!” Gandhi retaliated with a Hindi tweet that included a screenshot of the report.
“As I had said before, not five lakh, but 40 lakh Indians died as a result of the government’s neglect during Covid,” the former Congress head added. “Fulfill your responsibilities, Modi ji – compensate each (Covid) victim’s family with four lakh rupees,” Mr Gandhi said.
India questioned the World Health Organization’s (WHO) methodology for estimating COVID-19 mortalities in the country on Saturday, claiming that such mathematical modelling cannot be used to estimate death rates for such a large and populous country.
In reaction to the April 16 report headed “India Is Stalling WHO’s Efforts to Make Global Covid Death Toll Public,” the Union Health Ministry released a statement saying the government had raised issues with the global health organisation on multiple occasions about the methodology utilised.
The Congress has claimed that the government has withheld the genuine COVID-19 fatality counts and has demanded a compensation of Rs. 4 lakh for the deceased’s family members.
According to figures updated on Sunday by the Union Health Ministry, the death toll from Covid has risen to 5,21,751, including four new fatalities.
