Tension has reached a boiling point in Manipur following the surfacing of a disturbing video of May 4, showing two women from one community allegedly being subjected to a deplorable act by several men from another community. The incident, which took place in Kangpokpi district, has drawn widespread condemnation from various groups and officials.

The video, which came to light on the eve of a planned protest march organized by the Indigenous Tribal Leaders’ Forum (ITLF), portrays the distressing scene of men allegedly molesting the helpless women while they cry and plead with their captors. Adding to the gravity of the situation, the perpetrators chose to share the video on social media, thus publicly revealing the identities of the victims.
In response to the video and the ensuing outrage, authorities have initiated an investigation into the matter. The police are actively looking into the incident to identify the culprits and bring them to justice.
Expressing their deep concern and condemnation, the ITLF issued a statement urging the central and state governments, the National Commission for Women, and the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes to acknowledge the gravity of the offense and ensure that the perpetrators are held accountable.
The tension in Manipur has been exacerbated by ongoing ethnic clashes between the Meitei community, predominantly residing in the Imphal valley, and the Kuki community, who predominantly inhabit the hills. These clashes have been taking place since May 3 and have resulted in a tragic loss of lives, with over 160 fatalities reported so far.
Meanwhile, the Kuki-Zo tribals have announced plans to raise their concerns about the assault incident during a proposed protest march in Churchandpur on Thursday.
