New Delhi: The BRICS grouping has adopted a joint declaration with consensus, marking a significant diplomatic achievement for India, the host nation. The adoption of the New Delhi Declaration came after intensive back-channel negotiations managed to bridge divisions between Iran and the United Arab Emirates regarding the West Asia conflict.
Information was available with The Chenab Times that Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the consensus on the declaration at the conclusion of the opening day’s proceedings of the two-day summit. The BRICS, a bloc that operates on consensus, faced a critical juncture as negotiations on the declaration’s text extended to the final moments due to hardened stances from both Iran and the UAE, where any single member nation has the power to block a joint statement.
Following the inaugural session, Prime Minister Modi was observed engaging in a handshake with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
In his concluding remarks, Prime Minister Modi stated that the day’s discussions highlighted the inadequacy of existing institutions in navigating a changing global landscape, emphasizing the necessity for reforms in representation, responsiveness, and rule-making. He underscored the importance of equal participation for the Global South in the development of future technologies and the establishment of their governing rules.
The Prime Minister further elaborated that the disparity between decision-making and eventual outcomes must be addressed through robust partnerships and collective action. He noted that the New Delhi Declaration adopted during the summit provides a clear roadmap for the group’s shared objectives, and it is now incumbent upon the member nations to translate these resolutions into concrete achievements.
The summit brought together leaders and representatives from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, alongside other invited nations, to deliberate on pressing global issues, economic cooperation, and institutional reforms. The successful adoption of the declaration signifies a unified approach by the BRICS nations on key international matters, reinforcing their collective voice on the global stage. The deliberations also focused on ways to strengthen intra-BRICS cooperation in areas such as trade, finance, and technological innovation, aiming to foster mutual growth and development among member states.
Discussions at the summit also touched upon the need for a more inclusive and representative global governance architecture. Leaders expressed their commitment to multilateralism and underscored the importance of international cooperation in addressing challenges such as climate change, economic instability, and public health crises.
