In a harrowing incident that unfolded on Wednesday, an army colonel, a major, and a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP) lost their lives during an encounter with militants in the Gadole area of Kokernag in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district, according to officials.
The tragic incident transpired following specific intelligence indicating the presence of militants in the area. In response, a coordinated effort between the police and army was initiated, leading to a search and cordon operation in Gadole Kokernag.
As the joint team progressed towards their target area, militants initiated indiscriminate gunfire, resulting in severe injuries to an army colonel, a major, a soldier, and the DySP of Police. Despite immediate medical attention, the colonel, major, and DySP tragically succumbed to their injuries, as confirmed by a senior police officer.
DySP Humayun Bhat, who lost his life in the line of duty, was the son of former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ghulam Hassan Bhat.
The operation remains ongoing, with additional police and army reinforcements swiftly deployed to the scene to manage the situation and maintain security.
