The Uttar Pradesh government stated on Thursday that a single-member Commission of Enquiry, led by former High Court Judge Awanish Kumar Awasthi, will investigate the violence in Lakhimpur Kheri district on Sunday, which killed eight people, including four farmers. The news came as a Supreme Court bench led by Chief Justice NV Ramana was set to hear an important case.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 3 of the Commissions of Enquiry Act, 1952 (Act no. 60 of 1952), the Governor is pleased to appoint Justice High Court, Allahabad (retd) Pradeep Kumar Srivastava as a single-member Commission of Enquiry with Headquarters at Lakhimpur Kheri,” said the October 6 notification.
“The Commission is required to complete the investigation within two months of the date of this notification. Any alteration in its tenure will be at the Government’s request “Awanish Kumar Awasthi, Uttar Pradesh’s Additional Chief Secretary, signed the order.
The Supreme Court has decided to hear the case in light of mounting public anger over the Uttar Pradesh police’s conduct of the inquiry, media reports, and a petition from two state lawyers to the Chief Justice. The letter demanded an investigation by the CBI, which would be overseen by the Supreme Court.
