President Joe Biden announced that the United States will impose a first round of sanctions on Russia, as well as reposition American soldiers already stationed in Europe. Biden’s declaration came after the European Union and the United Kingdom announced a limited set of sanctions aimed at Moscow.
President Vladimir Putin’s recognition of two self-proclaimed republics in eastern Ukraine caused a significant escalation of tensions, virtually putting an end to eight years of negotiation. Putin’s deployment of soldiers to separatist-held regions was approved by Russia’s upper parliament on Tuesday.
The quick sequence of events, which includes Germany’s decision to halt construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, ends weeks of brinkmanship, with the Kremlin saying it has no preparations for a full-scale invasion. The US warned that Russia may invade, provoke an incident as a pretext for military action, or launch cyberattacks, citing intelligence.
The US is placing sanctions on Russia’s selling of sovereign debt overseas, as well as on the country’s “elites and their family members,” according to Biden. He also stated that he is transferring American military in Europe to support Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, and warned that more sanctions may be imposed.
“If Russia continues its aggression, it will pay an even higher price, including new sanctions,” Biden warned in a White House address, adding that he believes Putin’s recent words regarding separatist-held regions are a hint that the Russian leader isn’t interested in peace.
