Woman Arrested in Baramulla for Allegedly Impersonating as Police Officer, Extorting Money

The Jammu and Kashmir Police in Baramulla have arrested a woman who allegedly impersonated a police officer and extorted money from an unsuspecting victim, as revealed in a recent statement provided by the police.

According to the statement issued by the Baramulla Police on Saturday, the incident allegedly unfolded on September 1, 2023. A woman identifying herself as Ashia allegedly approached an individual during a bus journey, claiming to be a Sub-Inspector currently stationed at Police Station Kunzar. Ashia allegedly assured the victim that she could secure a job for him as a Constable in the Jammu and Kashmir Police, presenting herself as having the authority to do so. Consequently, the victim allegedly handed over ₹10,000 rupees to the impersonator.

In a statement recounting the incident, the Baramulla Police mentioned, “The victim believed the impersonator’s claims about securing a job and gave her the money.”

However, Ashia allegedly did not stop at this initial transaction. She reportedly contacted the victim again on the same day, allegedly soliciting an additional amount to expedite the delivery of his appointment order. She allegedly assured him that the entire process would be completed within 2 to 3 days. It was at this point that the victim allegedly became suspicious and decided to report the matter to the Police Station Kunzer, prompting an official investigation.

Regarding the victim’s decision to report the incident, the Baramulla Police stated, “The victim became suspicious when the impersonator asked for more money and promptly reported the matter to us.”

During the subsequent investigation, the police allegedly successfully apprehended the impersonator, whose real identity was allegedly revealed as Bisma Yousuf Sheikh, daughter of Mohd Yousuf Sheikh, a resident of Tappie Khag. In addition to her arrest, law enforcement officials allegedly recovered a police uniform and the ₹10,000 rupees that had been allegedly fraudulently obtained from the victim.

A spokesperson from the Baramulla Police department commented on the incident, saying, “This case allegedly underscores the importance of vigilance and caution when dealing with unknown individuals who allegedly make promises of job opportunities or allegedly represent law enforcement agencies. We are allegedly committed to protecting our community from such allegedly fraudulent activities.”

The Baramulla Police have allegedly issued a warning to the public, urging them to allegedly exercise caution and to promptly report any allegedly suspicious activities to the authorities.
