Jammu Transporters Call Off Strike After Assurance From Union Home Secretary

Oil tanker drivers and operators in Jammu and Kashmir have called off their 72-hour strike following an agreement reached between their central representatives and the Union Home Secretary. The strike, which began on Monday, disrupted fuel supply across the region causing long queues and dry pumps.

The decision to end the strike came after the Union Home Secretary assured the representatives that their concerns regarding the contentious Hit & Run law provisions under the Bhartiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) would be addressed. All J&K Transport Welfare Association president Ajit Singh confirmed that the strike was called off based on this assurance at the national level.

“Our representatives will be taken on board regarding the deliberations on the contentious law before any decision is taken,” said Anan Sharma, president of All J&K Petrol Tanker Owners’ Association. He earlier raised concerns about the new law that mandates a 10-year jail term and Rs 7 lakh fine for drivers involved in Hit & Run cases.

While some pumps in Jammu had reportedly run dry due to the strike, Sharma clarified that operations would resume immediately in light of the agreement. He expressed appreciation for the intervention of the central government and hoped for a satisfactory resolution to the concerns raised by the transporters.

This development brings relief to motorists and businesses in Jammu and Kashmir who were affected by the fuel supply disruptions. However, it remains to be seen whether the government’s assurances will lead to meaningful changes in the Hit & Run law and address the grievances of the transporters.
