JAMMU, March 22 – Widespread protests erupted across Jammu on Friday following remarks by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Mehraj Malik, who allegedly linked Hindus to liquor consumption. Several Hindu organizations and political groups demanded an immediate apology, condemning the statement as derogatory and inflammatory.
Speaking outside the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Thursday, Malik said, “They (Hindus) will not close down liquor shops because they drink during festivals and marriages too. They are addicted to it.” His remarks sparked an uproar both inside and outside the legislative house, with BJP members strongly opposing the statement.
Adding to the controversy, Malik further stated, “Both Hindus and Muslims drink alcohol, but Hindus don’t hesitate, while Muslims drink secretly.” The comments fueled public outrage, with calls for immediate retraction and an apology.
Hindu groups, including the Dogra Front, Shiv Sena, Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), and Bajrang Dal, staged demonstrations at multiple locations in Jammu. Protesters burned effigies of Malik and raised slogans against him and AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal.
“He has hurt the sentiments of crores of Hindus. Are we addicts, as he said? This is an outrageous and communal remark. He must apologize,” Dogra Front Shiv Sena president Ashok Gupta told reporters.
In Kathua, BJP workers organized a protest march, setting fire to Malik’s effigy and demanding a public apology. Similar demonstrations took place in Kishtwar and Udhampur, where the Sanatan Dharam Sabha and Hindu Sangathan also called for action against Malik.
BJP leaders accused Malik of promoting communal disharmony. “We will not tolerate his anti-Hindu behavior. He should apologize immediately,” a BJP spokesperson said.
During the assembly session, Malik’s remarks triggered heated confrontations with BJP lawmakers, leading to disruptions. Opposition members also criticized his comments, urging political leaders to exercise caution in their statements.
As tensions escalate, no official response has been issued by AAP regarding the controversy. However, political analysts say the incident may further strain relations between AAP and BJP in Jammu and Kashmir’s volatile political landscape.
