Aug 8 — OpenAI has launched GPT-5, describing it as the company’s most advanced artificial intelligence model to date and a “significant step” toward more reliable, human-like reasoning.
The new system, announced Thursday, is designed to handle a wide range of tasks — from short, direct answers to complex multi-step reasoning — without requiring users to choose between different AI versions. OpenAI says GPT-5 adapts its approach in real time, aiming for both speed and accuracy.
According to the company, the model reduces factual errors by nearly half compared to its predecessor, GPT-4o, and cuts hallucinations by as much as 80 percent in its deep-reasoning mode. It also improves on what OpenAI calls “graceful failure,” openly stating when it cannot answer a question instead of producing misleading information.
The launch includes multiple versions: GPT-5 for everyday use, GPT-5-mini for faster and cheaper interactions, and GPT-5-nano for embedded systems. Free ChatGPT users will have access to the base and mini models, while paying subscribers can use more advanced tiers such as GPT-5-pro and GPT-5-thinking.
GPT-5 offers a longer memory, able to process up to 256,000 tokens — the equivalent of hundreds of pages of text — in a single conversation. The system integrates with tools such as Gmail and Google Calendar, supports voice interaction, and lets users choose from different chat personalities.
For developers, GPT-5 is now built into GitHub Copilot, promising smarter auto-completion, better code context, and improved handling of multi-step tasks. OpenAI says these upgrades make it more capable of tackling large-scale programming challenges.
The company stressed that safety was a central focus in the rollout. More than 5,000 hours of “red-teaming” — stress-testing the model against misuse — were conducted before release. Still, OpenAI maintains GPT-5 is not a fully autonomous system and does not meet its own definition of artificial general intelligence.
Industry analysts say the release could reshape the competitive landscape in AI, challenging rivals like Google DeepMind’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude. “It’s not just a model update,” said one analyst. “It’s a shift in how AI is packaged and delivered.”
OpenAI has not disclosed the full technical specifications of GPT-5, but the company says users can expect more natural conversations, stronger reasoning, and fewer misleading responses — qualities it hopes will build greater trust in AI systems.
