NEW DELHI, Sept 9 — The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has issued an order to name 1,300 remote coastal islands, increase surveillance, and hoist the Tricolour at these locations, according to details received by The Chenab Times. News18 reports that the directive follows a 2022 report by the Indian Space Research Organisation’s National Remote Sensing Centre, which mapped the islands for development and strategic purposes.
Copies of the order have been sent to state heads, police chiefs, and security agency leaders to ensure adequate presence and flag hoisting. The plan was discussed at the November 2024 DG conference, attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Union Home Minister, the National Security Adviser, and other senior officials.
The initiative builds on Modi’s 2020 Independence Day address, where he highlighted the potential of over 1,300 islands. The ISRO report will guide phased development, including tourism hubs, land use, geomorphology studies, and exploration for lithium deposits and groundwater.
