Ilhan Omar Fires Back at Trump: ‘Proud to Be Muslim, Somali, and American’

WASHINGTON — Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar responded defiantly to President Donald Trump’s Thursday attack on her Somali heritage and personal life, posting on X that she is proud of her Muslim and Somali roots as well as her American citizenship, according to details received by The Chenab Times.

In a post at 06:04 am IST on September 20, 2025—hours after Trump’s Truth Social message labeling her a “SCUM” and reviving a debunked marriage rumor—Omar wrote: “I am proud to be born a Muslim. I am proud to be born in Somalia. I am proud to have become an American. None of you can change that no matter how much you rage tweet. Drink some water and touch grass.”

The post, which garnered over 44,000 likes, 3,800 reposts, and nearly 1 million views within hours, at the office filing this report, drew widespread support from allies and criticism from conservatives. It follows Trump’s September 19 rant describing Somalia as a “plagued” nation of poverty, terrorism, and corruption, questioning Omar’s right to influence U.S. policy.

Omar, a Minnesota representative and one of the first Muslim women in Congress, has faced repeated attacks from Trump, including 2019 calls for her deportation. Her response echoes past rebuttals, emphasizing resilience amid racism. The exchange highlights ongoing partisan divides, with Trump’s post amplifying a failed Republican censure effort against Omar last week over her comments on a conservative activist’s assassination.
