The National Medicinal Plants Board (NMPB), operating under the Union Ministry of AYUSH, has approved a proposal amounting to Rs 53 lakh for the establishment of 100 School Herbal Gardens across the Jammu Division. This initiative aims to foster awareness and promote the conservation of medicinal plants among students.
Project Details and Objectives
The project entails the creation of herbal gardens in designated schools spread across all districts of the Jammu Division, with a plan to implement the initiative in 10 schools per district. This development follows recommendations made by the Directorate of AYUSH, Jammu and Kashmir (JK Medicinal Plants Board). The primary goal is to integrate traditional knowledge of medicinal plants into the formal school education system through practical, hands-on learning experiences.
These herbal gardens are envisioned as experiential learning spaces. Students will have the opportunity to learn about the identification, cultivation, and diverse uses of various important medicinal plants. The initiative is also designed to deepen students’ understanding of biodiversity, the importance of environmental conservation, and traditional healthcare practices.
The Directorate of School Education Jammu has identified and shortlisted the 100 schools that will participate in the execution of this project.
Officials’ Remarks
Ajay Kumar Tikoo, Director AYUSH, JK and CEO of the JK Medicinal Plants Board, characterized the approval as a significant stride towards bridging formal education with indigenous knowledge systems. He emphasized that the initiative will provide valuable experiential learning platforms, encouraging students to connect with nature and engage with health and wellness practices.
Tikoo further stated that the program is expected to raise awareness about preventive healthcare, foster environmental responsibility, and contribute to the conservation of medicinal plant species. He anticipates that the initiative will yield long-term benefits by cultivating an appreciation for AYUSH systems and ensuring the preservation of traditional knowledge for future generations.
He also conveyed his gratitude to Health and Medical Education Minister Sakeena Itoo for her supportive role in securing the project’s approval. Additionally, he acknowledged the guidance and assistance provided by M Raju, Commissioner Secretary of the Health and Medical Education Department.
