SRINAGAR: In a significant development addressing the safety concerns of students in Kulgam, authorities have taken prompt action to relocate classes for students who were previously forced to cross a dangerous river to reach their school. The move comes after a video circulating on social media highlighted the precarious situation faced by approximately 90 students in the Nandimarg area of Kulgam.
The Chief Education Officer (CEO) of Kulgam, accompanied by officials, visited the area on the directions of the Education Minister to assess the situation. It was observed that the absence of a bridge over the stream necessitated the daily river crossing for students commuting to school. This posed a considerable risk to their safety and well-being.
Immediate Measures for Student Safety
In response to the urgent safety concerns, authorities decided to shift Classes 9 and 10 to a newly constructed double-storey school building situated in the upper area of Nandimarg. This building accommodates the majority of students from these grades. To ensure the continuity of education without compromising safety, three qualified subject-specific teachers have been deployed to the new facility.
The Chenab Times has learned that this swift intervention has resolved the immediate issue, allowing academic activities to proceed smoothly and safely for the affected students. The relocation ensures that students can continue their education without the daily peril of crossing the river.
Persistent Infrastructure Challenges in Kulgam
This incident in Nandimarg highlights a recurring issue of inadequate infrastructure, particularly the lack of bridges, in various parts of Kulgam district. Earlier reports and ongoing project reviews indicate a consistent effort by the district administration to address these infrastructure deficits. For instance, the district has been actively working on languishing projects, including the construction of several bridges funded through the JKIDFC. Notable among these are bridges over the Veshaw river and other streams, aimed at improving connectivity and accessibility for local communities.
Despite these efforts, the daily struggle of students in Nandimarg underscores the challenges in reaching all remote areas with essential facilities. The relocation of classes is a temporary measure, and the long-term solution of constructing a bridge remains a critical demand from the local populace to ensure permanent safety and access for students and residents alike.
The administration’s rapid response to the viral video demonstrates a commitment to addressing immediate safety risks. However, the underlying need for enhanced and consistent infrastructure development across Kulgam district remains a priority, as evidenced by the ongoing reviews of various projects, including roads, buildings, and water supply schemes, aimed at improving the overall quality of life and access to essential services for all residents.
