Srinagar, April 25: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha has called upon sports ministers and administrators nationwide to bolster grassroots sports development by ensuring the presence of physical education teachers in schools and providing necessary resources to nurture emerging talent. He emphasised integrating sports into daily life, extending beyond competitive arenas to foster a pervasive sporting culture.
According to details received by The Chenab Times, Lieutenant Governor Sinha was addressing a national ‘Chintan Shivir’ or contemplation camp focused on sports, held in Srinagar. He stressed that genuine athletic prowess often originates from humble beginnings in villages, local communities, and neighbourhood clubs, where raw talent is discovered before being refined by formal academies.
The Lieutenant Governor advocated for sports to be interwoven into the fabric of everyday life, permeating neighbourhoods, streets, and open spaces, thereby becoming a regular activity rather than an isolated pursuit confined to stadiums or tournaments. He reiterated the critical need for sports ministers and administrators to equip physical education teachers in schools with the requisite resources and support to effectively identify and cultivate athletic talent.
Highlighting the often-underestimated role of physical education instructors, Lieutenant Governor Sinha stated that their importance rivals that of teachers in core academic subjects like science or mathematics. He asserted that this perception must evolve, recognizing that every physical education teacher plays an indispensable part in India’s ambition to become a global sporting powerhouse, deserving of respect, recognition, and adequate resources for talent identification and development.
Beyond the pursuit of medals, Sinha underscored that sports should be leveraged as a potent instrument for societal transformation. He remarked that infrastructure development alone is insufficient; it must be complemented by purposeful initiatives. A collaborative effort involving schools, communities, local administrations, and families is essential to cultivate an environment where every young athlete has an opportunity to discover their potential, whether on a running track, football field, basketball court, or swimming pool. He pointed out that the nation’s strength lies in aligning its overarching vision with localized execution, ensuring that central government schemes effectively reach talented individuals in villages.
The Lieutenant Governor also encouraged the free exchange and adoption of best practices from one state to another, facilitating a nationwide advancement in sports development. He called for the establishment of systematic processes to identify and elevate talent from rural areas, supported by scientific, accessible, and impartial evaluation mechanisms. He stressed the importance of optimal and efficient utilization of existing sports infrastructure.
Addressing the role of the corporate sector, Sinha urged businesses to contribute to building a sustainable and inclusive sports ecosystem, acknowledging that government efforts alone cannot achieve this goal. He appealed to corporations to act not merely as sponsors but as active partners in this national endeavour, leveraging their resources and corporate social responsibility initiatives.
The Lieutenant Governor appealed to sports councils, federations, administrators, experts, industry leaders, and officials from across the country to collaboratively formulate a strategic development plan that aligns with international sporting calendars. He acknowledged India’s abundance of gifted athletes and emphasized the collective responsibility to bridge the gap between talent and opportunity. Strengthening grassroots sports ecosystems, he concluded, is not merely an aspiration but a fundamental duty.
The three-day event, organized by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, is dedicated to examining key policy challenges in sports, enhancing coordination between the Centre and states/Union Territories, and devising a comprehensive roadmap to elevate India to the status of a global sporting superpower. The gathering includes sports ministers from various states, sports administrators, principal secretaries from states, and representatives from national sports federations.
