Uttar Pradesh is currently experiencing a severe heatwave across large swathes of the state, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting the continuation of intense hot conditions until April 27. Relief is anticipated from April 28 onwards, with predictions of thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds.
Information was available with The Chenab Times indicating that on Sunday, heatwave conditions were observed in numerous locations across both western and eastern Uttar Pradesh. Concurrently, isolated areas are likely to experience warm nights. The intensity of the heatwave is expected to persist on Monday, though it is projected to be confined to fewer isolated pockets.
The IMD has identified several districts that are particularly susceptible to heatwave conditions during this period. In eastern Uttar Pradesh, these include Banda, Chitrakoot, Kaushambi, Prayagraj, Fatehpur, Pratapgarh, Mirzapur, Varanasi, Jaunpur, Ghazipur, Azamgarh, Mau, and Ballia. Western Uttar Pradesh districts such as Lucknow, Kanpur, Agra, Meerut, Ghaziabad, Aligarh, and Jhansi, along with their surrounding regions, are also under a heatwave watch.
Furthermore, the meteorological department has issued warnings of warm night conditions in several districts, predominantly in western Uttar Pradesh. Areas identified include Meerut, Ghaziabad, Hapur, Bulandshahr, Aligarh, and Agra.
Lucknow registered a maximum temperature of 43 degrees Celsius and a minimum temperature of 26.8 degrees Celsius on Sunday, according to meteorological data. Banda emerged as the hottest location in the state, with the mercury reaching a sweltering 46.6 degrees Celsius, which is 4.4 degrees above the normal temperature for this time of year. Prayagraj followed closely, recording a high of 45.7 degrees Celsius, 4.8 degrees above its normal temperature.
Other notable temperature readings across the state where the mercury exceeded the 44-degree Celsius mark included Fursatganj in Amethi district at 44.7 degrees Celsius, Hamirpur at 44.2 degrees Celsius, and Kanpur at 44.1 degrees Celsius. Both Jhansi and Varanasi recorded maximum temperatures of 44 degrees Celsius.
The current heatwave situation is attributed to a combination of factors, including hot westerly winds in the lower atmosphere and the influence of an anti-cyclonic circulation over interior Maharashtra. These conditions are anticipated to remain largely unchanged for the next two days.
A significant shift in weather patterns is expected from April 28, influenced by a western disturbance. This system is predicted to bring isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds, with speeds ranging from 30 to 40 kmph, across the state. Officials anticipate an increase in wind speeds to 40-50 kmph on April 29.
Thunderstorm activity is forecast to continue until at least May 2, impacting both eastern and western regions of Uttar Pradesh. Districts expected to experience this activity include Gorakhpur, Deoria, Basti, Saharanpur, Muzaffarnagar, Bareilly, and Moradabad.
Banda had previously recorded a temperature of 47.4 degrees Celsius on Saturday, making it the hottest place in the state and across the country for that day. Prayagraj and Varanasi were also noted among the hottest cities in India, ranking fourth and fifth respectively.
A gradual improvement in weather conditions is expected from April 28 onwards as rainfall activity intensifies. This is projected to lead to a decrease in maximum temperatures by approximately 3 to 5 degrees Celsius, signaling the abatement of the ongoing heatwave conditions.
The meteorological department has issued advisories urging residents to take necessary precautions against the extreme heat and to limit prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during peak hours to mitigate the health risks associated with high temperatures.
